On the Indonesian island of Java, one of the world's oldest forms of theatre still draws devoted audiences. Known as wayang kulit, it is an art of shadows, in which flat puppets made of carved leather are pressed against a lit screen. Spectators may sit on either side: some watch the intricately painted figures directly, while others observe only their flickering shadows. A single performer, the dalang, controls the entire spectacle. Seated for hours on end, he manipulates dozens of puppets, alters his voice for each character, directs the accompanying orchestra, and narrates a tale that may unfold from dusk until dawn. The stories are typically drawn from ancient epics and dramatise timeless struggles between duty and desire, or good and evil. Yet wayang kulit is not preserved as a museum piece, rigidly unchanged. Skilled performers habitually insert humour, local gossip, and pointed commentary on current affairs, ensuring that centuries-old narratives continue to speak to contemporary concerns. A performance can therefore function simultaneously as sacred ritual, popular entertainment, and subtle social criticism. Sustaining such a demanding tradition is not easy in an age of screens and instant distraction. Nevertheless, cultural organisations and a new generation of puppeteers are working to keep it alive, convinced that these dancing shadows still hold lessons worth passing on.
