Beyond the Genes

For much of the twentieth century, biologists held that our genetic inheritance was fixed at conception, an immutable script passed unaltered from one generation to the next. The emerging field of epigenetics has complicated that tidy picture considerably. Rather than rewriting the DNA sequence itself, epigenetic mechanisms act like molecular switches, silencing or activating genes in response to diet, stress, and environmental exposure. Remarkably, some of these acquired modifications appear to be heritable, meaning the privations endured by one generation may leave a biochemical imprint on the next. Such findings blur the once-rigid distinction between nature and nurture. They imply that our lived experience is not merely endured but, in a sense, inscribed.
