Not long ago, creating a painting required years of practice with a brush. Now, powerful computer programs can generate striking images in a matter of seconds, based only on a short written description. These systems have studied millions of existing artworks and learned to imitate countless styles, from classical portraits to modern cartoons. Many artists feel threatened, fearing that machines will replace human creativity and flood the market with cheap images. Others see the technology as simply another tool, no more dangerous than the camera once was.
