In Praise of Idleness

We have been sold, almost imperceptibly, the notion that every waking hour must be wrung dry of productivity. Yet the mind, much like a field left fallow, replenishes itself precisely when we stop demanding anything of it. Some of history's most consequential insights arrived not at a desk but in the bath, on a stroll, or in the drowsy limbo before sleep. To loaf, then, is not to squander time but to court the sort of serendipity that no calendar can schedule. Perhaps the truest measure of a civilised life is how gracefully it tolerates the unhurried.
