The Convenience Trap

Not long ago, buying groceries meant walking from shop to shop — the baker, the butcher, the greengrocer — exchanging a few words at each counter. Today, for many people, it means tapping a screen and waiting for a van to arrive. The transformation has been swift, and its advantages are undeniable: convenience, choice, and the reclaiming of hours once spent pushing a trolley down crowded aisles. And yet something subtle has been lost along the way. The old errands, tedious as they sometimes were, stitched us into the fabric of a neighbourhood. We recognised the faces behind the counters; we overheard local gossip; we bumped into acquaintances and lingered, however briefly. Convenience, by contrast, is frictionless and solitary. Each transaction is efficient, but it connects us to no one. This is not an argument for abandoning modern life and romanticising the past, which had its own drudgery and inconvenience. Rather, it is an invitation to notice what our choices quietly cost us. Efficiency is not a neutral value; it reshapes how we move through the world and whom we encounter along the way. The wise course, perhaps, is balance. We might embrace the ease of delivery for the weekly staples while deliberately preserving a few unhurried errands — the market stall, the corner shop — precisely because they are inefficient, and precisely because they keep us tethered to the life around us.
