Tiny Helpers

Bees are small insects, but they do very important work. As they fly from flower to flower to collect sweet nectar, they also move a yellow powder called pollen. This process is called pollination, and it helps plants make seeds and fruit. Without bees, many of the foods we love would disappear. Apples, strawberries, almonds, and many vegetables all need bees to grow. In fact, scientists say that about one in three bites of our food depends on pollinators like bees. Bees live together in large groups called colonies. Inside the hive, thousands of bees work as a team. Some clean, some guard the entrance, and others search for food. When a bee finds good flowers, it returns and does a special dance to tell the others where to go. Sadly, bees are facing problems today. Chemicals, disease, and the loss of wild flowers all make their lives harder. By planting flowers and avoiding harmful chemicals, we can help these tiny helpers survive.
