The Journey of a River

Every great river begins as something small. High in the mountains, melting snow and rain gather into tiny streams. These streams join together, growing wider and stronger as they flow downhill. The force of gravity pulls the water ever onward, carving valleys and shaping the land along the way. As a river travels towards the sea, it changes character. In the mountains it moves quickly, tumbling over rocks and forming rapids. Lower down, where the land flattens, it slows and begins to wind gently across wide plains. Here it drops sand and mud, building up rich soil that farmers have valued for thousands of years. Rivers have always been essential to human life. Ancient civilisations grew up along their banks, using the water for drinking, farming, and transport. Even today, many of the world's largest cities sit beside a river. Yet rivers are under threat. Pollution, dams, and the growing demand for water have damaged many of them. Protecting these vital waterways is one of the great challenges of our time, for they sustain both nature and people.
