Where Rivers Fall

A waterfall is one of nature's most beautiful sights. It forms when a river flows over the edge of a cliff and drops down to a lower level. The falling water makes a loud sound and often creates a cloud of mist. On sunny days, this mist can produce a rainbow. Waterfalls come in many sizes. Some are only a metre high, while others are enormous. The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls in Venezuela. Its water falls so far that much of it turns into mist before it reaches the ground. Waterfalls change over time. The powerful water slowly wears away the rock at the bottom. Little by little, the edge of the cliff moves backwards. This process takes thousands of years, so we cannot see it happen. Many animals and plants live near waterfalls, where the air is cool and wet. People love to visit them too, to enjoy the fresh air and the wonderful view.
