Mountains of Fire

Deep beneath the surface of the Earth, temperatures are so high that rock melts into a thick, glowing liquid called magma. A volcano is a place where this magma can escape. When pressure builds up underground, the magma is forced upwards until it bursts through a weak point in the Earth's crust. Once it reaches the surface, we call it lava. Not all eruptions are the same. Some volcanoes release rivers of lava that flow slowly, giving people time to move to safety. Others explode violently, throwing ash, gas, and rock high into the sky. These sudden eruptions can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Although volcanoes can cause destruction, they also bring benefits. Over thousands of years, volcanic ash breaks down and creates some of the most fertile soil on the planet. This is why many farmers choose to live near active volcanoes, despite the risks. Scientists study volcanoes carefully, measuring tiny movements in the ground and changes in gas. By doing so, they hope to warn communities before a major eruption takes place, saving countless lives.
