The Hidden Network Beneath Our Feet

When most people think of fungi, they picture mushrooms sprouting after rain. Yet the mushroom is merely the visible tip of a far larger and more mysterious organism. Beneath the soil stretches a vast web of thread-like filaments called mycelium, which can extend for kilometres and, in some cases, live for thousands of years. This underground network performs a role that is essential to nearly all life on land. Fungi break down dead leaves, wood, and other organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the soil so that plants can absorb them once more. Without this constant recycling, forests would eventually drown in their own debris, and the ground would grow barren. Perhaps most remarkably, mycelium forms partnerships with the roots of trees. Through these connections, trees and fungi exchange resources: the fungi supply minerals and water, while the trees provide sugars produced by photosynthesis. Some scientists believe that trees can even use this network to send warning signals to their neighbours, or to share nutrients with weaker individuals nearby. Researchers are only beginning to grasp the complexity of these hidden systems. What was once dismissed as simple rot is now recognised as one of the most sophisticated and interconnected forms of life on our planet.
