Alexander von Humboldt was arguably the most celebrated scientist of his age, yet his name has since faded into comparative obscurity. Restless and insatiably curious, he scaled volcanoes, waded through rainforests, and measured everything from air pressure to the blueness of the sky. What distinguished him was not any single discovery but a sweeping vision: he perceived nature as one interwoven whole long before ecology existed as a discipline.
