The Lighthouse Keeper

For nearly thirty years, Elena lived alone on a rocky island, taking care of the old lighthouse. Every evening, as the sun disappeared into the sea, she climbed the narrow stairs and lit the great lamp. Its bright beam warned passing ships to stay away from the dangerous rocks. Life on the island was not easy. In winter, storms shook the walls of her small house, and the sea roared like a wild animal. For weeks, no boat could reach her, and she had only the wind and the birds for company. Yet Elena never felt truly lonely. She said the ocean was her oldest friend. Over the years, she saved many sailors. Once, during a terrible storm, a fishing boat lost its way in the dark. Elena kept the light burning all night, and by morning, the exhausted crew found the harbor safely. They never forgot the woman on the island. When machines finally replaced the keeper, Elena moved to the mainland. But every night, she still looked toward the sea, remembering the light that had guided so many people home.
