This is the promise of the smart home, where everyday objects are connected to the internet and can be controlled by voice or by a phone. In a smart home, many devices work together. A speaker in the corner listens for commands and answers questions. Cameras at the front door let you see who is ringing the bell, even when you are far away. Some fridges can notice when the milk is running low and add it to your shopping list automatically. The main advantages are comfort and safety. People who find it hard to move around can control their whole house with a few simple words. Lights that switch on while you are on holiday can make thieves believe someone is home. Yet these clever systems raise difficult questions. A device that is always listening also collects a lot of personal data. If a criminal broke into the system, they might spy on a family or unlock the front door. Security, therefore, remains the biggest challenge for the smart home.
