The Invisible Network Above Us

Few of us look up and think about the thousands of satellites silently circling the Earth, yet modern life would collapse without them. From the moment you check a weather forecast to the instant a map app guides you through an unfamiliar city, you are relying on machines orbiting hundreds of kilometres overhead. Satellites perform a surprising range of jobs. Communication satellites carry television signals and phone calls across oceans. Navigation satellites, working together in careful formation, allow a device on the ground to calculate its exact position. Others point their cameras downward, tracking storms, measuring the melting of distant ice, and helping scientists understand how the climate is changing. In recent years, the cost of launching a satellite has fallen dramatically, and private companies have begun placing them into orbit in vast numbers. This boom brings clear benefits, but it also creates a growing hazard. Old, broken satellites and countless fragments of debris now race around the planet at tremendous speed. A single collision could destroy a working satellite and scatter thousands of new pieces. Astronomers have raised a further concern: bright clusters of satellites are beginning to interfere with their view of the night sky. Managing this crowded region of space has quietly become one of the great challenges of our age.
