Keepers of the Spoken Word

Long before writing became widespread, human societies relied on the spoken word to preserve their collective memory. Across much of West Africa, this vital responsibility fell to a respected figure known as the griot. Far more than a mere entertainer, the griot served as a living library, entrusted with the history, genealogy, and wisdom of an entire community. Trained from childhood, often within families where the profession passed from parent to child, a skilled griot could recite the ancestry of local rulers stretching back many generations. At important ceremonies such as weddings, births, and the crowning of leaders, the griot would perform, weaving together historical facts, moral lessons, and music played on traditional instruments. Their words carried genuine authority, and a ruler's reputation could rise or fall according to how the griot chose to portray him. Crucially, these performances were never mechanical repetitions. A gifted griot adapted each telling to the particular audience and occasion, adding fresh detail while remaining faithful to the essential truth of the account. In this way, knowledge stayed alive and relevant rather than frozen on a page. Although printing, radio, and the internet have transformed how information spreads, the griot tradition has not vanished. Contemporary musicians proudly trace their craft to these ancestral storytellers, demonstrating that an oral heritage, carefully guarded, can adapt and endure across centuries.
