High in the great mountains, where the air grows thin and the wind cuts like a blade, Tenzin had spent his entire life guiding travelers toward the summits. He was not a famous adventurer whose photograph appeared in magazines; he was one of the quiet local guides without whom no expedition could succeed. He carried heavy loads, found safe routes through the ice, and knew the mood of the mountain the way others knew the streets of their town. Tenzin respected the peaks far too much to see them as mere obstacles to conquer. To him, the mountains were living things, capable of both breathtaking beauty and sudden, merciless danger. He had witnessed climbers, blinded by ambition, ignore his warnings and pay a terrible price. Those memories made him cautious, and his caution had saved many lives. Wealthy visitors sometimes treated him as little more than a servant, yet Tenzin never resented them. He understood that they came searching for something — a challenge, a story, perhaps a sense of meaning missing from their comfortable lives. In helping them reach the top, he offered a gift far greater than they realized. When at last he grew too old to climb, Tenzin trained the next generation, passing on not just skill, but humility before the mountains he loved.
