The Corner Café

There is a small café on the corner of Anna's street, and over the years it has become part of her daily life. She stops there almost every morning on her way to work, and the staff know her order by heart: a medium coffee with a little milk and no sugar. What keeps Anna coming back is not really the coffee, which is good but not remarkable. It is the atmosphere. The owner greets regulars by name, the music is never too loud, and there is always a comfortable seat by the window where she can watch the street wake up. The café is also where Anna has met some of her neighbours. A brief chat while waiting in line has, on more than one occasion, turned into a genuine friendship. In a large and often impersonal city, such places are surprisingly valuable. Anna sometimes wonders what she would do if the café ever closed. Small businesses like this one struggle with rising costs, and several shops on the same street have already shut down. For now, though, she is grateful for her little morning routine, and for the sense of belonging that comes with it.
