Winding Down

The way a person ends the day often reveals more about them than the way they begin it. Mornings are frequently dictated by necessity — alarms, deadlines, the relentless machinery of obligation. Evenings, by contrast, are where we exercise what little sovereignty our schedules allow, and how we spend those final waking hours is a matter of genuine consequence. For much of modern history, the close of day was governed by darkness. When the light faded, activity naturally wound down. Artificial lighting, and later the glow of screens, severed that ancient link, and we have been paying for the disconnection ever since. Sleep specialists now speak, almost pleadingly, of the need to dim the lights and set aside our devices well before bed. A deliberate evening ritual can serve as a bridge between the demands of the day and the surrender of sleep. It need not be elaborate: a short walk, a few pages of a book, a cup of something warm, a moment of tidying so that the morning self inherits a little order rather than chaos. The specific form matters less than the intention behind it. What such rituals share is a gentle signalling to the body and mind that the day's business is concluded. In an age that prizes ceaseless productivity, the decision to stop — consciously, unapologetically — may be one of the most quietly radical things we do.
