City life is often caricatured as anonymous and cold, a place where millions of strangers brush past one another without a flicker of recognition. There is truth in the image, but it is far from the whole story. Look closely at any urban neighbourhood, and you will find something that resembles a village hidden inside the metropolis — sustained not by grand institutions but by an accumulation of tiny, habitual encounters. Consider the cast of characters who populate an ordinary day: the newsagent who nods as you pass, the dog walkers who exchange knowing glances, the elderly man who occupies the same bench each afternoon. Individually, these interactions are almost negligible. Collectively, they form an invisible web of familiarity that makes a vast city feel, against all odds, inhabitable. Sociologists sometimes call these fleeting bonds "weak ties", and their importance is easy to underestimate. Unlike close friendships, they demand little and offer no deep intimacy. Yet research suggests that a rich network of such acquaintances contributes significantly to our sense of well-being and belonging. A brief, cheerful exchange with a near-stranger can lift a mood more reliably than we might expect. The lesson is worth remembering in an era when it is entirely possible to pass a whole day without speaking to a soul. The small courtesies of daily life are not trivial. They are, quietly, the mortar that holds a community together.
