The Wisdom of Ancient Forests

An old-growth forest is unlike any other. These are woodlands that have escaped major disturbance for centuries, allowing them to develop a richness and complexity that younger forests simply cannot match. Towering trees, some older than the nations around them, stand alongside rotting logs, dense undergrowth, and layers of life at every height. Nothing here is wasted; nothing is out of place. The value of such forests extends far beyond their beauty. Ancient trees store immense amounts of carbon, filter the water we drink, and shelter countless species that can survive nowhere else. A single fallen trunk may nourish beetles, fungi, and seedlings for decades as it slowly decomposes, becoming the foundation for the next generation of trees. Tragically, old-growth forests are vanishing. Once cut down, they cannot be quickly replaced, for it takes hundreds of years to recreate the conditions that make them so extraordinary. A newly planted forest, however well intentioned, is a poor substitute for one shaped by time. Recognising this, conservationists across the globe are fighting to preserve the fragments that remain. These forests are not merely collections of trees, but living archives of the natural world, irreplaceable and profoundly worthy of protection.
