The Frozen Frontier

Stretching across the far north of our planet lies the tundra, a vast and treeless landscape where the ground itself remains frozen for most of the year. Beneath a thin surface layer that thaws each summer lies the permafrost, soil that has stayed frozen solid for thousands, sometimes millions, of years. It is one of the harshest environments on Earth, yet it teems with surprising life. For a few brief weeks each summer, the tundra transforms. The upper soil softens, wildflowers bloom in brilliant colours, and enormous flocks of birds arrive to feed on swarms of insects. Great herds of caribou migrate across the plains, followed by the predators that depend on them. Then, almost as quickly as it came, the warmth fades, and the land returns to its long, dark winter. Today, however, this ancient balance is shifting. As global temperatures climb, the permafrost is beginning to melt. This is deeply concerning, because the frozen soil holds vast quantities of carbon, trapped from plants that died long ago. If it thaws, this carbon could escape into the atmosphere as greenhouse gases, accelerating the very warming that released it. What happens in these remote regions, scientists warn, will affect the entire world.
