Machines That Learn

For decades, computers were essentially obedient machines: they followed exact instructions written by human programmers and did nothing more. Artificial intelligence, often shortened to AI, marks a profound shift in this relationship. Instead of being told precisely what to do, modern AI systems are trained on enormous quantities of data and gradually learn to recognise patterns on their own. The results can be remarkable. AI programs now translate between languages in an instant, suggest which film you might enjoy, and help doctors spot early signs of disease in medical scans. In some narrow tasks, these systems already outperform the most experienced human experts. Yet the technology is far from perfect, and its rapid spread has provoked serious debate. Because an AI learns from data collected in the real world, it can absorb the same biases and mistakes that exist in society. A hiring program, for example, might unfairly favour certain applicants simply because past decisions did so. Moreover, the most advanced systems are so complex that even their creators cannot fully explain why they reach a particular conclusion. As AI becomes woven into daily life, societies face pressing questions about responsibility and control. Who is to blame when a self-driving car makes a fatal error? The challenge ahead is not merely to build cleverer machines, but to ensure that they serve human values.
