The Right to Be Forgotten

For most of human history, forgetting was the default and remembrance the laborious exception; now the ledger has flipped. The internet, that tireless clerk, files away our every gaffe and misstep, ready to exhume a decade-old indiscretion at a moment's notice. A youthful blunder that once faded with the neighbourhood's memory can now shadow a person indefinitely, indexed and searchable forever. Some argue for a legal "right to be forgotten," a deliberate reintroduction of mercy into a system with none. Others counter that to erase the record is to gently rewrite history — and that here, as so often, one person's oblivion is another's censorship.
