The Clockmaker

In a narrow alley of the old quarter, behind a window crowded with ticking timepieces, worked a clockmaker named Bruno. He belonged to a vanishing profession, one that demanded extraordinary patience and a steady hand. While the rest of the city rushed to replace everything digital, Bruno devoted his days to mechanisms that others had long abandoned. Customers came to him with heirlooms — pocket watches inherited from grandparents, mantel clocks that had marked the hours of entire generations. To Bruno, each object carried an invisible history. He would lean over his workbench for hours, peering through a magnifying lens, coaxing tired gears back to life. Repairing a clock, he often said, was not merely a technical task but an act of respect for the people who had once treasured it. His apprentice, a restless young man, initially found the work unbearably slow. He longed for instant results and quick rewards. Gradually, however, under Bruno's quiet guidance, he came to appreciate the beauty of precision. He learned that some things cannot be hurried, and that true craftsmanship reveals itself only to those willing to wait. When Bruno eventually retired, he left behind more than repaired clocks. He had passed on a philosophy: that patience, attention, and care are themselves a kind of art.
